'An Evening With Robin Williams,' Circa 1982

Despite a prolific career on TV and film, Robin Williams was equally famous for his standup comedy on stage. In appreciation of his life and work, All Things Considered offers a clip from An Evening with Robin Williams, which was released in 1982.

MELISSA BLOCK, HOST:

And finally this hour, some words from Robin Williams himself from his 1982 stand-up special "An Evening With Robin Williams." In this part, Williams is performing on stage when a woman in the audience suddenly gets up from her seat to leave.

(SOUNDBITE OF FILM, "AN EVENING WITH ROBIN WILLIAMS")

ROBIN WILLIAMS: Wait, don't go now. Don't go. You're going to miss the really heavy duty stuff. OK, we'll wait.

(LAUGHING)

WILLIAMS: No pressure.

(LAUGHING)

WILLIAMS: Let's put on that closed-circuit video. No, she'll be back in a few minutes.

(LAUGHING)

WILLIAMS: Go see if she's OK, will you?

(LAUGHING)

WILLIAMS: Dammit, the poor woman might be trapped.

(LAUGHING)

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: Allison.

WILLIAMS: Her name is Allison?

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: Allison.

WILLIAMS: Allison?

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: Allison.

WILLIAMS: Allison. Allison, this is the police. We know you're in there.

(LAUGHING)

WILLIAMS: Allison, if you come out, we won't have to have a fight, Allison. Come on out. We're going to throw in some stuff in there if you're not coming out, Allison. We've got the dogs out here. (Barking). Allison, we brought your mother. (Imitating Mother) Allie, come out.

(LAUGHING)

WILLIAMS: (Imitating Mother)Allie, come out of the bathroom now, girl.

Allison, we brought Rabbi Tom with us, too. (Imitating Rabbi Tom) Allie, what you doing in there? Ever since you've been hanging out with these shiksas you've been a different girl.

(LAUGHING)

WILLIAMS: Allison, dammit girl, come out. She's safe in there, dad. It's OK. I'll find her.

(LAUGHING)

WILLIAMS: I feel like those native guys (chanting). Oh, this man is backing up over these people going [bleep], we paid good money to get stepped on. Hold on, I've got your chair here. Don't be afraid. Sorry. Well, she's gone now. Well, I guess she won't be coming back. She won't be needing this then.

(LAUGHING)
