In her new memoir “Fighter Pilot’s Daughter”, Mary Lawlor tells the story of her experience as a young woman coming of age in an Irish Catholic, military family during the Cold War.  Lawlor, also a professor of English and Director of American Studies at Muhlenberg College, joins hosts George Miller and Kate Scuffle to talk about her book, her story, and coming of age in the 60’s. Author Matthew Crain on Arts Salon

Bathsheba Monk welcomes Matthew Crain to Lehigh Valley Arts Salon to talk about his new book, Reading Dubliners published this fall.  A self-proclaimed James Joyce enthusiast, Matthew's short stories have appeared Harper's Magazine and have been anthologized in Best American Short Stories.  He lives in Easton, Pennsylvania. The program will conclude with Tasty Seasonal Recipes featuring pizzelles.

The Board of Governors of the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation have awarded WDIY a discretionary grant of $2,500 for Lehigh Valley Arts Salon. The grant will help in the production, studio and engineering cost associated with the program.

"We were thrilled to receive word of the grant," comments Rebecca Walz, Director of Development and PR for the station. "These funds will go a long way in helping us continue to produce Lehigh Valley Arts Salon on a weekly basis, highlighting dozens of cultural organizations across the Lehigh Valley every year."

Lehigh Valley Christmas on Arts Salon

Our own much-loved holiday tradition, The Lehigh Valley Christmas in Concert, returns to Miller Symphony Hall on Thanksgiving Sunday, December 1.  The concert showcases the area's finest musicians and their renditions of holiday classics and carols, from folk to jazz, to Celtic and blues.  Producers Miriam Huertas and Mike Krisukas join hosts Kate Scuffle and George Miller to share what magic they've lined up for us this year! Fresh takes on beloved theatre classics are featured on today’s Arts Salon with hosts George Miller and Kate Scuffle.  Muhlenberg College faculty member Troy Dwyer has newly adapted, and directed, Shakespeare’s “The Winter’s Tale” for Muhlenberg Theatre, and actor Jim Benner is in Particle Theatre’s upcoming production of Samuel Beckett’s “Endgame”, directed by Norman Roberts and presented at Illick's Mill.  (Original air date Nov. 18, 2013.)

Sharon Kaucher, Coordinator of the Allentown Academy of the Arts & visual arts teacher at William Allen High School joins George Miller and Kate Scuffle on the eve of the annual Academy of the Arts “8x8” fundraiser, the popular showcase of 8x8 works by over 50 regional artists as well as Allen Academy of the Arts teachers, students, and alumni.  “8x8” takes place on Wednesday, November 13 at Muhlenberg’s Baker Center for the Arts, from 4 – 6:30pm – but get there early for the best selection of fabulous, affordable art! Host George and Kate welcome Ann Lalik from The Art Gallery at Penn State Lehigh Valley about the new exhibition titled The Eighth Street Bridge Turns 100, which will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Albertus Meyers Bridge in Allentown. This bridge that is commonly referred to as the 8thStreet Bridge was dedicated on November 17, 1913. General Harry C. Trexler is credited for the impetus to build the bridge to enhance the economy of the Lehigh Valley as it connected the north and south sides of Allentown.

Philadelphia Film Festival on Arts Salon

Charles James interviews Philadelphia Film Festival Artistic Director, Michael Lerman on this week’s Lehigh Valley Arts Salon for the first segment on the program.  The festival features over 100 feature films all day at five venues daily through October 27.  Highlights are noted in the events section of WDIY’s website.  The second segment of the program, Charles will talk with Brad Sears and Paul Grecian of the Lehigh Valley Guild of Craftsmen about their upcoming 28th Annual Holiday Marketplace Fine Art & Craft Show at the Swain School taking place October 26-27.
