Wild Nothing: Dream-Pop's Leading Light

As Wild Nothing, singer-songwriter Jack Tatum writes hazy reveries that reflect the shimmer of early-'80s Manchester pop, the sparkle of The Cure's upbeat not-quite-love songs and a dense forest of Slowdive-era shoegaze.

Studying those bands rather than mimicking them, the shy Virginia native — who recorded his 2010 debut, Gemini, in his Virginia Tech dorm room — has spent years crafting his radiant dream-pop sound. Wild Nothing's second album Nocturne, one of the prettiest records of 2012, has nudged Tatum even further into focus as a songwriter.

Tatum recorded Nocturne with producer Nicolas Vernhes (Dirty Projectors, Deerhunter) at the Rare Book Room in Brooklyn, seeking a fresh perspective on songs written during a sleepless year in Savannah, Ga. Here, Tatum and his bandmates visit WFUV/The Alternate Side to perform the album's title track.
