Plus-Sized Fashionista Dancin' To The Music

MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:

And finally today, it's time for the occasional series we call In Your Ear. That's where some of our guests tell us about the music they're listening to these days. Today, we speak with fashionista Lisa Dolan. She and her husband are owners of Lee Lee's Valise, a plus-sized clothing store in Brooklyn, New York. She was also the star of the TLC reality program "Big Brooklyn Style." It was filmed in her store and she recently joined us to talk about how she got started in fashion and her ideas about style. And now she's telling us what's playing in her ear.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "DANCE TO THE MUSIC")

LISA DOLAN: Hi, my name is Lisa Dolan from "Big Brooklyn Style," and this is what I'm listening to.

SLY STONE: (Singing) Dance to the music.

DOLAN: My first song is "Dance to the Music" by Sly & The Family Stone.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "DANCE TO THE MUSIC")

STONE: (Singing) All we need is a drummer for people who only need a beat, yeah.

DOLAN: Long story short, one of my cousins got the album for Christmas and played it the whole 10 days that I was there. I must have been 10.

(LAUGHTER)

DOLAN: And it just brings back really good memories every time I hear it and it's all about dancing to the music.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "DANCE TO THE MUSIC")

STONE: (Singing) Dance to the music. Yeah. Dance to the music. Dance to the music. Dance to the music.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "STAYING ALIVE ")

DOLAN: And I'm also listening to "Staying Alive" by the Bee Gees.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "STAYING ALIVE ")

BEE GEES: (Singing) Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk, I'm a woman's man: no time to talk. Music loud and women warm, I've been kicked around since I was born. And now it's all right, I'm OK. And you may look the other way. We can try to understand the New York Times effect on man.

(Singing) Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother, you're stayin alive, stayin alive. Feel the city...

DOLAN: It screams Brooklyn. Again, "Big Brooklyn Style." It's about surviving, toughing it out and making it happen.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "STAYING ALIVE ")

GEES: (Singing) ...stayin alive. Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin alive. Hey...

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG "HOT IN HERRE")

NELLY: (Rapping) Oh. I wanna a little bit and a little bit of ah, ah. And a little bit of ah, ah. Just a little bit of, ah, ah.

DOLAN: The last song is "Hot in Herre" by Nelly.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "HOT IN HERRE")

NELLY: (Rapping) I was like, good gracious, bodacious. Flirtatious, tryin to show faces . I was lookin for the right time to shoot my steam. You know, lookin for the right time to flash them keys. Then um I'm leavin, please believin. Oh. Me and the rest of my heathens. Check it, got it locked at the top of the Four Seasons. Penthouse, roof top, birds I feedin. No deceivin, nothin up my sleeve, no teasin...

DOLAN: My interpretation is: it's getting hot in here because of menopause.

(LAUGHTER)

DOLAN: I mean isn't it about menopause? You just want to keep taking your clothes off?

(LAUGHTER)

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "HOT IN HERRE")

NELLY: (Rapping) I said it's gettin hot in here...

DOLAN: (Singing) So take your franny(ph) off. It's getting hot in here.

(LAUGHTER)

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "HOT IN HERRE")

UNIDENTIFIED GROUP: (Singing) I am gettin so hot, I wanna take my clothes off.

NELLY: (Singing) Oh, it's getting hot in here, so hot, so take off all your clothes.

UNIDENTIFIED GROUP: (Singing) I am gettin so hot, I wanna take my clothes off.

NELLY: (Rapping) Why you at the bar if you ain't poppin the bottles.

MARTIN: That is the hot, in every sense of the word, fashionista Lisa Dolan. To hear my earlier conversation with Lisa, please go to NPR.org and click on the Program guide and search for TELL ME MORE.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "HOT IN HERRE")

NELLY: (Rapping) Flip gate, time to spark it. Gucci collar for dollar, got out and walked it. I spit game cuz baby I cant talk it. Warm, sweatin its hot up in this joint. Vokal tank top, on at this point. Your with a winner so baby you can't loose. I got secrets can't leave Cancun. So take it off like you're...

MARTIN: And that's our program for today. And I'll be taking a couple of days off. Guest host Viviana Hurtado will be sitting in the chair. Be sure to check out her website thewiselatinaclub.com. And remember to tell us more, please go to NPR.org and find us under the Programs tab. You can find our podcast there. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter @TELL ME MORE/NPR. I'm Michel Martin and you've been listening to TELL ME MORE from NPR News. They'll be more talk tomorrow.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "HOT IN HERRE")

NELLY: (Rapping) Mix a little bit of ah, ah, with a little bit of ah, ah. Nelly just fall out. Give a little bit of ah, ah. With a little bit of ah, ah. Nelly hang all out. With a little bit of ah, ah. And a sprinkle of that ah, ah. Nelly just fall out. I like it when ya ah, ah. Girl baby, make it, ah, ah... Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
