Morgan Freeman Drives Himself, Listens To Sinatra

MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:

We're going to wrap up our program today with one of our regular features that we call In Your Ear. That's where some of our guests tell us about the music that inspires and soothes them.

Recently, we spoke with a man who really needs no introduction.

MORGAN FREEMAN: Hi, I am Morgan Freeman.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "SOMETHING COOL")

JUNE CHRISTY: (Singing) Something cool I'd like to order something cool.

FREEMAN: And what's in my ear is "Something Cool" by June Christy.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "SOMETHING COOL")

CHRISTY: (Singing) But it's simple and neat. It's just right for the heat. Save my furs for the cold.

FREEMAN: "Something Cool" is such a great story, it really is. It's a narrative.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "SOMETHING COOL")

CHRISTY: (Singing) And I'm feeling so bad about a date. Oh wait. I'm such a fool. He's just a guy who stopped to buy me something cool.

FREEMAN: When I drive my car I have Frank Sinatra's album.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "COME FLY WITH ME")

FRANK SINATRA: (Singing) Once I did you up there...

FREEMAN: One of my favorites, of which is "Come Fly with Me."

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "COME FLY WITH ME")

SINATRA: (Singing) We'll just why, starry eyed. Once I get you up there I'll be holding you so near you may hear angels cheer 'cause we're together.

FREEMAN: "Come Fly with Me" is Frank Sinatra just doing Frank Sinatra. Wonderful.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "COME FLY WITH ME.")

SINATRA: (Singing) You just say the words and we'll beat the birds down to Acapulco Bay. It's perfect for flying honeymoon, they said. Come fly with me. Let's fly. Let's fly. Pack up, let's fly away.

FREEMAN: And I also like Patti LaBelle doing "Lady Marmalade."

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "LADY MARMALADE")

PATTI LABELLE: (Singing) Hey. Hey. Hey. Seeing her skin feeling silky smooth. Colour of cafe au lait. Made the savage beast inside roaring till it cried, more, more, more.

FREEMAN: It is another nice narrative, but great arrangement by Alan Poussaint.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "LADY MARMALADE")

, SINGER: (Singing) But when he turns off to sleep All memories keep More, More, More. Gitchi Gitchi Ya Ya Da Da Da. Gitchi Gitchi Ya Ya here. Mocca chocolate. Ya Ya. Creole Lady Marmalade.

MARTIN: That was, of course, Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman, telling us was playing in his ear. He stopped by our Washington, D.C. studios after picking up the Lincoln Medal of Honor in Washington, D.C. he told us about his upcoming movie, "The Magic of Belle Isle," among other things. You can hear my interview with Morgan Freeman on TELL ME MORE in just a few weeks.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "LADY MARMALADE")

, SINGER: (Singing) Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir? Voulez-vous coucher avec moi? Voulez-vous couchez avec moi ce soir?

MARTIN: And that's our program for today. I'm Michel Martin and this is TELL ME MORE from NPR News. Let's talk more tomorrow.
