Asleep At The Wheel On Mountain Stage

For its eighth and most recent appearance on Mountain Stage, the iconic Western swing band Asleep at the Wheel traveled to the birthplace of country music in the border town of Bristol, Tenn./Va. Led for more than 40 years by singer-guitarist Ray Benson, the group was conceived in the tiny town of Paw Paw, W.Va., in 1969. Since then, Asleep at the Wheel has become the world's undisputed king of Western swing bands.

While roughly 100 musicians have rotated in and out of the lineup throughout the band's long history, many members — including drummer David Sanger, bassist Dave Miller and fiddler-vocalist Jason Roberts — have been with the group for decades. They're joined here by singer Elizabeth McQueen, pianist Dan Walton and Eddie Rivers on the all-important steel guitar. This was Asleep at the Wheel's longest-ever Mountain Stage set, clocking in at 12 songs in 53 minutes.
