Roberto E. Gooden is married to Michele Gooden (an Education Professional). The pair have two children: Janae and Javier. Roberto is originally from Brooklyn, NY, and has lived in Panama, Maryland and now, Pennsylvania.
His background consists of over 20 years in Retail Management but he is most passionate about the field of Broadcast Communications where he has experience in Radio Operations, Sales and Promotions.
Roberto’s career began as a Club DJ and Mixtape DJ in his hometown of NYC in 1988. As a club DJ, he’s played at the historic Palladium & Limelight nightclubs and held residencies at Barcode in Times Square and the SoHo Kitchen & Bar in NYC.
An interest in Radio began when Roberto won a call-in contest on 91.5 WNYE FM at Medgar Evers College in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The grand-prize was the opportunity to be an on-air personality for a day and interview members of the seminal Hip-Hop group: Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five. After that in-studio interview, celebrities in the group complimented Roberto on his questions and told him he should pursue a career in Radio.
In the 1990’s, Roberto managed a big box record store called HMV Records in 34th Herald Square. HMV Record Stores were known to have visible DJ booths and full-time DJs in their stores. Roberto utilized his store’s DJ booth and invented the Retail Radio format. Since HMV was located in NY, which is the mecca of the music industry, he was able to book different levels and genres of recording artists to be interviewed LIVE in-store where the interview can be seen in the DJ booth (as opposed to Radio) and also sell CDs immediately. Some of the artists Roberto interviewed were Grammy Award Gospel Artist: Kirk Franklin and Grammy Award Winning Hip-Hop Artist and Actor: Common.
Since moving to Pennsylvania, Roberto has gained over 5 years of real world experience in broadcast radio. His start was in Communications at College Radio as an On-Air Personality, Board Operator and Show Producer at 90.3 WESS FM.
In the fall of 2011, Roberto started broadcasting on FM radio in Pennsylvania as the on-air personality named “DirtyFINGERS.” The pseudonym is taken from his days shopping in used vinyl record stores flipping through dusty albums and 12” singles looking for classic material to sample. The sample hunting experience left Roberto with dusty clothes and dirty fingers each time. Hence the name “DirtyFINGERS.”
90.3 WESS FM broadcasts on the FM dial in the Pocono Mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania. Within 3 months of starting an on-air shift at WESS FM in 2011, Roberto was asked to interview for the position of Promotions Director by the stations PD.
Roberto was ultimately elevated to the "Promotions Director" position of WESS FM and held the position from 2012-2014.
Within 18 months of being promoted to the board of WESS FM as the Promotions Director, Roberto was critical in making 90.3 WESS FM the winner of the "mtvU Woodie Award" for 2014-2015.
WESS was the first university in Pennsylvania to win the mtvU "Woodie Award" for Best College Radio Station in the USA.
He has since left East Stroudsburg University (for Northampton) but continues to press forward with aspirations of F/T work within the Broadcasting field.
Roberto currently hosts the Friday edition of The Blend on WDIY. He also hosts a recorded podcast called “The Traffic JAMMING show ft. DirtyFINGERS” and a live broadcast called " The Friday Night FUNKtion Show" on ChillLOVERradio.net.
