The 9th Annual Out Among the Stars Bluegrass Festival will be held at the Benton Rodeo Grounds, Benton, PA from July 3, 4, 5, 6.  Check out their website for more information.

The Appalachian Fiddle and Bluegrass Association holds their 20th Annual Bluegrass Festival from July 31, Aug 1, 2, 3 at Mountain View Park, Wind Gap, PA. Check out their website for more information.

The 7th Annual Hickory Festival will be held at the Stony Fork Creek Campground in Wellsboro, PA from August 15-17.  Check out their website for more information.

The Nutmeg Dulcimer Festival will take place in Hamden, CT on Friday and Saturday, September 26-27.  Featured Performers will include Tina Bergmann & Bryan Thomas,  Dan Duggan & Tom Hodgson and Neal Hellman .

 In Theatre   

Come to Touchstone Theatre for inspiration about acceptance, love, and coming to terms with our deepest fears. Fat Pig, a play by Neil Labute, opens Wednesday in Bethlehem, as part of the Omicron Theatre Project. This Omicron Theatre Project will be on stage at Touchstone Theatre until July 13th.

Ken Freehill will be performing his forty-five minute first person original reviews of Teddy Roosevelt and Will Rogers at  Landhaven Bed & Breakfast in the village of Huffs Church at 1194 Huff’s Church Road, Barto PA 19504.  Come see Teddy Roosevelt on Saturday July 12 at 8 PM and Will Rogers on Sunday July 13 at 2 PM. Ken Freehill is an accomplished actor of stage, screen and television and playwright. His forty-five minute first person original reviews have been performed in Texas, Kentucky, New Jersey and Tennessee.

Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre presents a treat for children aged four to ten on the college’s campus in Allentown. Learn important life lessons about friendship while watching A Year with Frog and Toad, which opens Wednesday at the Trexler Pavilion for Theatre & Dance. Coming up next week, the rock opera, The Who's Tommy takes stage for three weeks.

Twelfth Night will be on stage through Sunday at DeSales University in Center Valley, as part of the annual Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival in Center Valley. Come to enjoy this romantic comedic feast, with lovers and fools, twins, merry deceptions, and mistaken identities.

Also selected for this year’s festival are Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmund Rostand. The Green Show, with Renaissance music, dance, and clowning, will again be presented outdoors before the evening performances.

Wallflowers…wake up and join the fun! Come to Bethlehem Sundasy evening to the The Lehigh Valley Folk Dance Society International Folk Dancing at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Lehigh Valley on Sunday July.6th.

Coming up this Thursday, June 12th, the Allentown Arts Park Dance Series, which features outdoor dance performances, will present swing dance with Adam Swift. The event will take place at Fifth Street between Hamilton & Linden Sts.

And next Saturday, the Repertory Dance Theatre will perform at Art-in-the-Park at West Park in Allentown

 

 In Galleries Around Town   

The spoken word and visual art are woven together in a new exhibit at the Allentown Art Museum, which opens Sunday with an afternoon reception. Transitions IV: A Collection of Fiber Art and Poetry grew out of an artist residency at Program for Women and Families, led by artist Cassandra Stancil Gunkel and poet Marilyn Hazelton.

POPMART in Bethlehem is displaying paintings and furniture of Chris P. Jones and Christi Garton through Friday.

All That Glitters can be seen at the Baum School of Art in Allentown! Opening this week is the Pennsylvania Society of Goldsmiths’ exhibit of jewelry by the society’s members.

Opening Saturday at the Banana Factory in South Bethlehem is Trench Cuisine: A Rock Band’s Recipe for Semi-success. Craig Matis chronicles the journey of his band, Uzizi, with lyrics, 25 visual panels, and audiotapes.

Monsoon Gallery’s exhibit entitled In Bloom: The Art of Flowers will be on display through next Wednesday. Take a tour through this virtual garden, created by four artists, in south Bethlehem. The exhibit features unique approaches by Ann Schlegel, Nava Mentkow, and Kate Birch. The exhibit runs through July 9th

Paintings by Seymour Boardman and Other Abstract Expressionists is at the Anita Shapolsky Art Foundation in Jim Thorpe with musical performances, poetry readings, and arts discussions. The exit runs May 24 - Labor Day

The Rauch Business Center Gallery, features David Haas Photography: The Mack Truck Project, a collection of Black and white photographs continue on exhibit.

Works by Tony Rubel, past president of the Carbon County Art League will be featured at the T.S. Rubel Art Gallery of the Carbon County Art League in Jim Thorpe starting this weekend. Called Point of View, the show is a tribute to the late Mr. Rubel.

The Allentown Art Museum continues it's exhibit entitled The Wedding of Cupid and Psyche and the Council of the Gods. Fourteen etchings by German printmaker Susanna Maria von Sandrart reproduce fresco designs by Raphael. William Wegman's exhibt Faym is at the Kress Gallery through September 7, 2008

An Artistic Discovery, The Congressional High School Art Competition & Exhibition, featuring artwork by local high school students, will be featured at the Baum School of Art t in Allentown. The winner of this competition will have their work displayed in the Halls of Congress for one year.

The James A. Michner Art Museum in Doylestown. PA, is offering the exhibit, Color – Ten African American Artists – a show offering more than 30 creations by artists from across the country reflecting diverse backgrounds and personal histories.  This exhibit runs through July 6th . The World We Built features the pen and ink drawings as well as photography of Bethlehem Steel and surrounding areas by Will Cooney. The exhibit is at Visualize 4146 East Rock Road in Allentown.  For more information call 610-709-8669.

The Lehigh County Historical Society’s Heritage Museum is hosting World War II: Together in Victory, the human drama of the war recounted through personal stories, original uniforms worn by military personnel and by civilian home-front volunteers, official posters used to inspire the American public, authentic newsreel reports of the war, archival photographs and other military and home-front memorabilia are on display.

 

 Special Events   

In downtown Bethlehem, the Historic Bethlehem Partnership Tours is offering two tours on Saturday. The Segway Tour involves a two-and-a-half-hour ride on an electric, two-wheeled, self-balancing personal transporter. The tour departs in the morning from the Segway of the Lehigh Valley.

If you prefer a stroll, join John Adams’s Bethlehem Walk, which departs from the Welcome Center in the afternoon.

 

 Classical Calendar   

There are two opportunities in the coming week to hear the Allentown Band. They will present their annual "Sousa Concert" on Friday, July 11th at 7:30pm and again play on Tuesday evening, July 15th at 7:30pm. Both concerts will be held at West Park, 16th and Turner Streets in Allentown.

Tim Zimmerman and the King's Brass will be making joyful noise at Central Moravian Church on Sunday, July 13th at 6pm. The Nine-member King's Brass will perform hymn classics with a contemporary flair joined by organist Rebecca Kleintop Owens, director of music at Central Moravian Church performing on the church's newly restored and enhanced four manual Moeller and Walker organ. Looking forward to the end of the month, The Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra will continue its Valley Vivaldi Concert series at Wesley Church in Bethlehem on Sunday, July 27th.  Youth Media Calendar   

The Easton YMCA is hosting the tenth annual family firecracker four-mile run and walk Friday July 4, 2008 at Fairview Park in Palmer Township, Easton PA.  Registration starts at 7:00 AM and will end at 8:20 AM.  The run begins at 8:30 AM and the walk will begin at 8:35 AM.  Register early at their website or call 610-258-6158 for more information.

The Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley is offering the Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute to high-school aged youth.  PYLI is a training program designed to prepare young people for leadership roles in their communities.  Curriculum includes classroom instruction as well as observed training.  Training will occur from July 7 to July 11th from 9 to 2 and will take place in the Volunteer Center office in Bethlehem.  Applications and more information can be found at their website.

Have you got rhythm? Well, the Riverview Arts Center in Phillipsburg, NJ has music and clogging! All children between ages 6 and 12 have been invited to join the Lehigh Valley Cloggers.

 

Name that butterfly! On Saturday July 26th, come to Hawk Mountain and learn the common names of butterflies with Karl Gardner followed by a walk in the outdoors. Also, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is now accepting applications for its 2008 Raptor Camp.  Young nature enthusiasts who are entering fourth and fifth grade have to opportunity to learn about incredible birds of prey through hands-on lessons, outdoor exploration, and other crafts and activities.  Parents may select from two sessions, July 21 through July 25 or August 4 through 8. 

The Allentown Art Museum hosts The Tenth Annual City Arts Cultural Camp for children will be held at the museum from June 23rd through June 27th. It’s a zoo in there! Animals big and small are lurking in the Museum. Enjoy a week of zany fun with our many furry and feathery friends! It’s designed to give children ages eight through 12 exposure to the worlds of art, history, dance, theater, and music in the cultural heart of Queen City.  The Community Bulletin Board   

The Bethlehem Parent Tree Parent Support Group is up and running.  It is held Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:0-0 PM at Fritz Memorial Methodist Church located on the corner or Montclair and Packer Avenue just to the north and west of Lehigh’s campus in South Bethlehem.   The group is offered free of charge by Project Child and Valley Youth House.  Refreshments will be provided and childcare is available and free of charge.  For more information, please contact Project Child at (610) 954-9561 X37
