The Nineteenth Street Film Series at Allentown's Civic Theatre presents Priceless, a romantic comedy, in French with subtitles. Reminiscent of the classic Breakfast at Tiffany's, it's on screen through Saturday.

This is the Bar Mitzvah Year for the Jewish and Israeli Film Series which closes on May 13th.  The last film of the series is Making Trouble.  The film focuses on six Jewish women who struggled to achieve fame and their tale is highlighted on screen in this uproarious film.  It's on view at the Jewish Community Center in Allentown next Tuesday evening.

The South Side Film Festival presents independent films in its Third Thursday Series at the Goosey Gander. 

 

 

In Theatre  

Titanic: The Musical is at the Civic Theater June 6th through June 22nd.  The thrilling Tony Award-winning best musical examines the causes, the conditions and the characters involved in this ever-fascinating drama. This is the factual story of that ship — of her officers, crew and passengers. True stories are recounted. The central character of Titanic is the Titanic herself and the brave souls who perished and survived.

 

In Dance  

Step out on Saturday and enjoy the National Tap Dance Day Performance Showcase at Moravian College in Bethlehem. A day-long celebration culminates in this Tap Ties Company event, which features several dance groups, on stage at Foy Hall.

Feel like dancing? Come to the Valley Contra Dance Society's gathering on Saturday evening, at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Bethlehem. Bob Isaacs is the caller, with music by the Brazen Hussies. Valley Contra Dance sponsors contra dancing from 7:30 - 10:30 PM ( dance instruction at 7:00) Cost is $8.00 (age 7-15, students with ID $5.00, $1 discount for members ). In Galleries Around Town  

Penn State Lehigh Valley's Concourse Gallery in Fogelsville is hosting an exhibit entitled William Wentz—Watercolors, during the month of May.

The Allentown Art Museum is highlighting the work of hometown youth this month. On display through Thursday is the Allentown School District Middle Schools Exhibition. Opening next Tuesday is Allentown School District Academy of the Arts at Allen High School Exhibition, with 2-D and 3-D works.

Spring has moved indoors, right into South Bethlehem’s Monsoon Gallery, with the debut of their floral paintings display. In Bloom: The Art of Flowers features unique approaches by Ann Schlegel, Nava Mentkow, and Kate Birch.

Opening Wednesday at the Main Gallery, Zoellner Arts Center, on Lehigh University's campus are two exhibits. Richard Redd: Encaustic Paintings and Elaine Ling’s Photography of Tibet, Part II. While you’re on campus, stop in at Girdler Gallery to see Art Honors Exhibit: Sarah Mikenis, which opened on Sunday.

Want to get "all shook up"? Go see Explosive Expressions: The Collage Paintings of Allan Hill, on display through Friday at the Ambre Studio in south Bethlehem.

Wander through Wonderland, to the music of a rock and roll band, in Bethlehem on Saturday evening. Wonderland is the title of Popmart's latest exhibit, featuring new paintings and furniture by Chris P. Jones and Christi Garton.

The Allentown Art Museum continues it's exhibit entitled The Wedding of Cupid and Psyche and the Council of the Gods. Fourteen etchings by German printmaker Susanna Maria von Sandrart reproduce fresco designs by Raphael. On the Wednesday Noon Gallery Talk, you can hear Dr. Jacqueline M. Atkins'presentation on the exhibit. 

An Artistic Discovery, The Congressional High School Art Competition & Exhibition, featuring artwork by local high school students, will be featured at the Baum School of Art in Allentown. The winner of this competition will have their work displayed in the Halls of Congress for one year.

The James A. Michner Art Museum in Doylestown. PA, is offering the exhibit, Color – Ten African American Artists – a show offering more than 30 creations by artists from across the country reflecting diverse backgrounds and personal histories.  This exhibit runs through July 6th . The Lehigh County Historical Society's Heritage Museum is hosting World War II: Together in Victory, the human drama of the war recounted through personal stories, original uniforms worn by military personnel and by civilian home-front volunteers, official posters used to inspire the American public, authentic newsreel reports of the war, archival photographs and other military and home-front memorabilia are on display.

 

Arts SalonSpecial Events Arts 

The Celebrity Luncheon Series' speaker for Wednesday of next week is John Grogan, columnist and author of works such as Marley & Me. The event takes place at the Best Western in Bethlehem.

The Historic Bethlehem Partnership is offering two weekly tours through the end of June. Let your feet do the walking, right to the exhibit entitled Beneath our Feet, at the 1810 Goundie House. It’s a stop on the Colonial Industrial Quarter Walk, which takes place on Sunday afternoons. If you prefer wheels, try a Segway Tour, offered on Sunday mornings. After a training session on the Segway, a self-balancing personal transporter, you’ll ride in one as you tour north and south Bethlehem.

Sounds like a perfect day…art, storytelling and ballet, all out in the open air! The Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission's Arts and Crafts Show features juried works by over 80 local and national fine artists and crafters. It takes place Saturday and Sunday on Main Street.

The 101st Bach Festival runs May 8th through May 10th.  The Festival will feature the music of J.S. Bach along with numerous lectures on the life and music of Bach.  The three day festival will be held at various venues in Bethlehem. The Bach Choir of Bethlehem will be host for the first time to the biennial meeting of the American Bach Society exploring the theme of Bach and the Oratorio Tradition. Whether you are a long-time supporter or a first-time visitor, join the thousands of Bach lovers who will come to Bethlehem from across the nation and beyond to enjoy the music and conversation as our second century continues.  The following events are part of  the festival.

Friday May 9th from 11:00 AM –12:00 PM.  Round Table Discussion with a Panel of Bach Scholars at the Packard Laboratory Auditorium, Lehigh University. This is a free public session (registration required) of the American Bach Society Meeting.

Distinguished Scholar Lecture series will be held Friday, May 9th at 2:00 PM in the Diamond Theatre, Zoellner Arts Center. Dr. Christoph Wolff will hold a lecture entitled Are Bach’s Oratorios Sacred Operas?  Dr. Wolff is the Adams University Professor at Harvard University. Born and educated in Germany, he studied organ and historical keyboard instruments, musicology and art history at the Universities of Berlin, Erlangen, and Freiburg. He currently serves as the director of the Bach-Archiv in Leipzig and his many published writings on Bach include Bach: Essays on His Life and Music (1991), The New Bach Reader (1998), and Johann Sebastian Bach: The Learned Musician (2000.)

Thursday May 8th, at 8:00 PM. The Bach Festival will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Allentown, PA.  This popular introduction to the Bach Festival will feature highlights from the Mass in B Minor, Easter and Ascension Oratorios, and Cantatas performed during the main Festival concerts.

Friday May 9th at 4:30 PM The Easter Oratorio, Packer Memorial Church, Lehigh UniversityThe centerpiece of this concert is the Easter Oratorio, last performed at the Bach Festival in 1995. This virtuoso work, vividly depicting the emotions of the Easter story, is preceded by Cantata 118 – O Jesu Christ, mein Leibens Licht and the moving Trauer Ode, Cantata 198.

Friday May 9th at 6:00 PM.  Dinner/Discussion – Dr. George B. Stauffer in the Asa Packer Room, Lehigh University Center an informal talk by Dr. George B. Stauffer, Dean of the Mason Gross School of the Arts, professor of Music at Rutgers University, and a well-known writer on the life and works of J.S. Bach.

Friday May 9th at 8:30 PM. The Ascension Oratori, Packer Memorial Church, Lehigh University Continuing with the Festival theme of Bach and the oratorio tradition, we feature the Ascension Oratorio, last performed by The Bach Choir of Bethlehem in 2001 on an internationally acclaimed Dorian recording. The concert opens with Miserere by Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745), followed by Cantata 74 – Wer mich, der wird mein Wort halten.

Saturday May 10th at 10:30 AM Ifor Jones Memorial Chamber Music Concerts, Eliot Fisk and the Bach Festival Orchestra.  This event is being held at Baker Hall, Zoellner Arts Center, Lehigh University. World-renowned classical guitarist Eliot Fisk, who enchanted audiences at the Chamber Music in the Saal concerts in 2006, returns as a soloist for this concert in Baker Hall. Fisk will perform unaccompanied in a transcription of Bach’s Cello Suite No. 6 in D major as well as with the Bach Festival Orchestra in Vivaldi’s Lute Concerto in D Major. The program will begin and end with Bach’s Orchestral Suites No. 1 in C major and No. 4 in D major.

Saturdays May 10th at 10:30 AM Chamber Music in the Saal, Simon Standage, violin,  Saal of the Moravian Museum, Bethlehem, PA. Limited seating. Simon Standage was a leader and soloist with Trevor Pinnock's period instrument ensemble The English Concert from it’s founding until 1990 and is also well known for his work with the City of London Sinfonia and the Academy of Ancient Music of which he was associate director with Christopher Hogwood. He is a professor of baroque violin at the Royal Academy of Music.   For his debut at the Bethlehem Bach Festival, Standage offers a program of Bach violin partitas and music by Bach contemporaries.

Saturdays May 10th at 2:30 PM (Part 1) and 4:30 PM (Part 2) The Mass in B Minor Packer Memorial Church, Lehigh University.  The Mass in B Minor has been the heart of the Festival since the American premiere of this monumental work at the first Bethlehem Bach Festival in 1900

Sunday May 11th, at 2:00 PM The Young American Singer Competition will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, PA.  Free Admission.  The ten young finalists of this national Bach vocal competition sponsored by the American Bach Society and The Bach Choir of Bethlehem each perform two Bach arias for a distinguished panel of judges.

The Allentown Symphony presents a Musical Treasure Chest featuring flautist Catherine Deboeser.  The event takes place on May 8th.

The Allentown Symphony Pops Concert – Bell Telephone Hour takes place on May 10th at Symphony Hall

The Chamber Music Society of Bethlehem is pleased to present the Walden Chamber Players, a dozen Boston musicians that combine to play a variety of repertoire. Come enjoy the crystal clear waters of the beautiful Lake Nockamixon on the free pontoon boat eco-tour. On the two hour tour there will be a relaxing trip around the lake and information of the parks history and wildlife. Pre registration is required. Could you imagine The Beatles playing in concert with a symphony orchestra?  You can live it on June 7th at Allentown Symphony Hall.  Original members of Beatlemania will team up with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra.  Sid Bernstein, original Beatle promoter, who helped to bring the Beatles to the US, will tentatively hold a discussion and will share stories and memorabilia.  For more information, please check their website.

Raptors Up Close!, a program allowing visitors to see a live hawk or owl up close and learn more about winged predators will be offered at Hawk Mountain from April 5th to June 8th at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. There is no charge.
